Dollars to Donuts is a three part sculpture series created during a one month residency at the Chinese European Art Center (CEAC) in Xiamen, China. The work consists of bronze, ceramic, and blown glass and each piece measures approximately 7 x 19 x 19 cm.
This series is a continued exploration into food production and the landscape of what we eat in the twenty-first century. It considers the complex relationship between food, agriculture, industry, and the environments that sustain us. By creating a visual record of what our society eats and what we find popular, the pieces seek to question what the food we consume says about us as human beings at a crossroads in time and space.
Through these works, I am interested in the transformation of natural resources into commodities, and in the visual and cultural landscapes that have emerged around modern food production. The series reflects on the tension between the organic and the industrial, the familiar and the manufactured, and the abundance we experience as consumers versus the environmental and human systems that make that abundance possible.
By reimagining elements of food production and consumption through an artistic lens, the work invites the viewer to pause and consider what lies behind the everyday act of eating. It asks us to look beyond the finished product and towards the landscapes, labour, technology, and ecological consequences embedded within it.
